The UWC Athletics Club was established in 1974 and affiliated to the South African Amateur Athletics Board (SAAAB), which functioned under the auspices of the South African Council of Sport. (SACOS)

Beyond the promotion of the sport, the club embraced the founding principles of a non-racialism and democracy.

In 1982, a Track and Field Stadium of international standard was built on the UWC Campus. The availability of the facility brought about a different dimension as to the potential success of the club. The membership numbers increased considerably and the event participation showed increased phenomenally. The club gained recognition progressicely and served a high profile in the Western Province and SAAAB.

Track and Field Night meetings hosted by the Club became prime features on the athletic calender. Not only are athletics drawn from outside the province to events like this, but also the club became a hallmark of mass participation and talent identification of athletes from Western Cape schools and athletics clubs. A line-up of more than thirty youngsters in an 800m race, for instance, is not an uncommon sight. These characteristics are still entrenched in the current ABSA Discover A Star Track & Field Night Series (DAS). UWC also became the host of a numerous Provincial and National Championships in SAAAB.

During October 1993, under the convictions of political change, the club joined the Western Province Athletics, which are affiliated to Athletics South Africa. During that same year the club acted as host for the first National Track & Field Championships of the United South African Students Athletics Association of the now known, South African Sports Union (SASSU).

In 1995, the UWC 10km "Flat and Fast" Road Race was successfully piloted and sustained its popularity on the Western Province Road Racing calendar. In 1996 the club hosted the SASSU (Western Province) Track & Field meeting as well as the WPAS Cross-Country Championships.
In 1998, the SASSU (Western Province), Track & Field meeting was once again hosted by UWC Athletics Club.
