University of the Western Cape Athletic Club

The Club
The UWC Athletics Club was established in 1974 and affiliated to the South African Amateur Athletics Board (SAAAB), which functioned under the auspices of the South African Council of Sport. (SACOS)

Beyond the promotion of the sport, the club embraced the founding principles of a non-racialism and democracy.

In 1982, a Track and Field Stadium of international standard was built on the UWC Campus. The availability of the facility brought about a different dimension as to the potential success of the club. The membership numbers increased considerably and the event participation showed increased phenomenally.

VISION
We shall strive towards the empowerment and upliftment of the historically disadvantaged communities of the South African society through the sustained involvement in athletics.
At present, we serve communities of the Greater Cape Town and Western Cape Province, inter alia Bellville-South, Belhar, Delft, Eerste River, Gugulethu, Langa, Khayalitha, Mithschell's Plain, as well as communities from which students are drawn around South Africa.
We shall strive to fulfill our vision by ways of:
* Hosting events which would perpetuate mass participation with the express purpose of identifying athletic talent;
* Hosting national as well as international events for maximum exposure and networking;
* To provide activities for the youth which are socially constructive and acceptable;
* By being the centre of athletic activities such through research, development and administration. This can be attained by the establishment of a training Academy, where fitness testing, nutritional programmes, advantaged coaching and specialized medical treatment could be conducted. This can be realized because most components are already in place, such as an international stadium, specialized persons at the institution, e.g Medical staff (Physio-therapy, a General Practitioner, Domestic Science), Administrative staff and Coaching staff.
* By hosting courses/ workshops to increase the number of administrators, technical officials and coaches and to extend the knowledge base of those who are active in athletics.
* To nurture athletics potential and the holistic growth of individuals through empowerment, enrichment and capacity building
