Gelant beat some of the best athletes in the field including 2011 winner Kgosi Tsosane and old time favourite Steven Mokoka. [Read more...]

Reaching out through Cross-Country
Reaching out through Cross-Country
Twelve events almost nationwide, arranged within two weeks. The brief – take the sport to the people and what better way than looking at cross-country, as it is really the foundation of athletics.
Athletics SA put on 12 events in all provinces except in the Western Cape, KZN and Gauteng as “these provinces have good structures in place already,” according to ASA Board Member, Hendrik Ramaala. “We looked at those provinces who do not have those structures in place and awarded the Provinces R50 000 per event to distribute to a club (or clubs) of their choice, with the proviso that these clubs put on a cross country event and target youngsters, specifically school going kids and were clubs that needed assistance in developing themselves.” [Read more...]

SA Team for African Cross Country Championships
South Africa’s 10 000m and Cross Country Champion Steven Mokoka and the Phalula twins spearhead the South African contingent to both the African Cross Country Championships in Cape Town on Sunday 6 March and the World Championships in Spain two weeks later on 20 March.
Mokoka comfortably won the SA title in September in 2010 and was runner up behind Kgosi Tsosane at the trial’s held in Potchefstroom on 21 January. The result was in fact a position reversal of the SA Champs.
Lebogang Phalula and Annerien van Schalkwyk had tight battles at both the Championships and the trials and will be the pick of the ladies team; in fact the ladies team will look to them to challenge in the team category.
Both Mokoka and the Phalula girls will be racing in the 1 500m in the second Yellow Pages meeting of the series in Pretoria on Friday 25 February. Mokoka is in sublime form after winning the Best Med 10km (29:32) road race in Pretoria on Saturday morning 19 February, then drove through to Potchefstroom to compete in the men’s 3 000m which he duly won in a time of 7:55;92. Only four times was the eight minute mark beaten by a South African in 2010; all of those times were posted in Europe.
Mokoka did it in February in South Africa at altitude and he is fast becoming the man who will take over the mantle of South Africa’s premier middle distance athlete over distances ranging from the 1 500m to 10 000m on the track. With his 61:26 half marathon time and 2:08;33 marathon time, Mokoka is a class athlete on any surface and he will be ignored at the rest of the continent’s peril come the African Cross Country Championships.
The Phalula twins are also clearly in shape, particularly Lebogang, for the first ever African Cross Country event to be held in South Africa. The sisters competed in the European Cross Country season in December of last year and January this year with Lebogang finishing runner up in Fuensalida, Spain behind Kenya’s Eunice Jepkorir.
Her win at the trials showed she was the form athlete and the victory on Saturday 19 February in Potchefstroom at the Yellow Pages Meet over 3 000m is good preparation for the Cape Town event. She and her sister, like Mokoka, will be racing the 1 500m in Pretoria on Friday 25 February as final preparation for the Cross Country Championships.

Cape Town to host African Cross Country Champs
Cape Town to host African Cross Country Championships
South Africa has been appointed the host nation for the second Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Cross Country Championships, which will take place in Cape Town on Sunday 6 March 2011.
This event will be the first international athletics competition in this country since 1998 and a field of top runners from all over the African continent is expected to compete in this prestigious event.
The CAA African Cross Country Championships will take place at Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC), with each event run over a 2km course that will start on the Rondebosch Boys High School field, include a loop through Keurboom Park and finish in front of WPCC.
Senior men and women will compete over distances of 12km and 8km respectively, while junior men and women will run 8km and 6km respectively. Each country can have up to six athletes per category representing them, making a maximum total participation of 24 per country.
14 countries will be taking part in the event, including top athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, Congo, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and, of course, South Africa, to name a few.
According to James Evans, the chairperson of the Athletics South Africa board: “We are extremely proud to have been appointed as the host nation and the event promises to deliver some outstanding competition and will see some of the top runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and other African countries compete against our local runners.”
He added that the 2km loop route is in keeping with international standards and has been designed to offer spectators the opportunity to see some of the world’s top athletes in action up close and allow them the chance to interact with them and experience a world-class event first hand.
A 4km fun run has also been added to the programme and is open to runners who want to experience the event from a runners’ perspective. Runners will need to pre-enter this fun run event and can call the WPA office on 021-699 0615 to secure their entry. No entries will be taken on the day of the event.
ASA announced that the teams from the various countries, including South Africa, are still being finalised and will be announced shortly.
