The final ASA Champions Challenge is set to come alive on Friday night in Pretoria when Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, South Africa's top middle distance runner will make an attempt on the world best time in the 600 metres
Johnny Gray, one of the best middle distance runners the United States has produced, is currently the holder of the world best time for this distance with 1:12,81 and Mulaudzi is confident that he can better the time. In a training session last week, prior to the ASA Champions challenge in Oudtshoorn, Mulaudzi clocked 1:14,1 which ,according to his coach JP van der Merwe, is faster than Hezekiel Sepeng ever did in his career. At Oudtshoorn Mulaudzi easily won the 800 metres race and proved that he is in top condition.
This race will also serve as a final preparation for Mulaudzi in defence of his world indoor title. He will depart for the IAAF World Indoor Championships next week and would like to arrive in Moscow with a new world best under his belt.
Werner Botha, Christo Boshoff and Bonolo Maboa will also be in the race to push Mulaudzi to a possible new world best.
The ASA champions challenge in Pretoria on Friday night, will also serve as a final workout for South Africa's Commonwealth Games team before their departure to Melbourne next week and several outstanding performances can be expected.
One of the other highlights of the meeting will definitely be the 400m hurdles where the three Gauteng North athletes, LJ van Zyl, Alwyn Myburgh and Ter de Villiers, will continue their tussle which could lead to another world class time in this event.
The performances in the sprints for men, where Leigh Julius and Sherwin Vries will continue their battle, as well as Geraldine Pillay's performances in the women’s sprints will be other events to watch.
Tickets cost R20.00 and will be available at the stadium gates from 7h00am.
