Johannesburg, Wednesday, 4 January 2005 – Athletics South Africa (ASA) today announced that, following the CAS decision in the Tim Montgomery case, the South African Men’s 4x100m Relay Team will be declared, retroactively, gold medallist at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada in 2001. This was confirmed yesterday in writing by the IAAF.

The relay team, consisting of Morne Nagel, Corne du Plessis, Leeroy Newton, and Mathew Quinn claimed silver in the world event in a time of 38.47 seconds.

This brings the gold medal tally for those championships to two, and moves South Africa to joint tenth place with the Czech Republic (from position 17 on the medal tally).
