Johannesburg, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 – Athletics South Africa today announced that it would send a team of 32 athletes to compete in the Southern Region Cross Country Championships that will be held in Gaborone, Botswana, on Saturday, 25 February 2006.
South will be represented in all the Championship categories (senior men 12km and 4km, senior women 8km and 4km, junior men 8km and junior girls 6 km events) and the athletes will be out to prove themselves.
The Southern Region Championships serve as the final trials for the selection of the South African team to the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on 1&2 April and the South African athletes therefore have much to prove.
The competitions will this year be tough as it is learnt that the Southern Region countries have entered almost 300 athletes. Countries like Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi have a proud tradition in these Championships and the South Africans will have to perform at their best if they want to bring medals home.
The team will depart for Botswana on Thursday 23 February and will return on Sunday, 26 February 2006.
