For the first time in the history of South African athletics two major national championships have been combined to form one big event under the Athletics South Africa umbrella.

Athletics SA and South African Schools Athletics (SASA) have brokered a deal to combine the Yellow Pages South African Youth, Junior and u/23 Championships and the SA School Championships.  The separate events previously caused confusion in terms of the national champion, as different athletes could be the SA Champions in the same event and age category (e.g. SA Schools champion in high jump and an SA Youth or Junior Champion in high jump). 200m SA Junior Champion Wayde van Niekerk beat World Championships 4x400m Silver medallist, Shane Victor in the men’s 300m as well as the talented Shaun de Jager at the third leg of the Yellow Pages Summer Series in Stellenbosh on 15 December.  Due to the number of athletes competing, two finals were held and placing was done according to times. The highlight of the second Yellow Pages Summer Series Meeting in Oudtshoorn, was undoubtedly the men’s mile as pace maker Elroy Galant led the field of 6 athletes through the 800m mark in 1:58 – spot on for a sub 4 mile. But then the 5000m World Championship Athlete was already 30m ahead of the chasing pack. By the time he reached the bell (he was to take the field through 1200m in 2:58) he had a lead of 50m. Encouraged by stadium announcer, Altus Schreuder, Galant made a brave run for the finish. He was 1 sec off the pace as he started the last lap, and came desperately close to the magical mark of 4min. In the end Galant crossed the line in 4:01;69 – 5 seconds ahead of runner up Johan Cronje, with local Junior Ettiene Plaatjies a further second adrift. [Read more...]

These games are organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation for the development of sport to the youth of South Africa with the only condition being that the athlete may not have been chosen for any South African team before.
