Bailey, van Heerden claim AfricanX 2012 Title

AfricanX Winners 2012

AfricanX Winners 2012

Sunday, 18 March 2012 – Michael Bailey and Antoine Van Heerden of Team Velocity Sports Lab 2 walked off with the men’s champions title at the 2012 ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance after completing a sum total of 90km of trail running over the weekend in an impressive combined time of 6hours49minutes04seconds.

According to Bailey stage three was tough.  “I was definitely feeling the fatigue caused by the last two days of running.  Being the shortest route of the weekend, the leaders set a seriously fast pace.  We tried to catch them at the first uphill, but they dropped us soon afterwards and we decided to just hang in there.  Stage three’s route was very similar to that of stage one, with loose, technical and rocky sections forcing us to really concentrate.   We are very pleased with our win and I would definitely like to run with Antoine again next year.  The ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun is very good for strength training.  The atmosphere and vibe at the event is amazing, while the announcers do an awesome job in motivating runners,” says Bailey.   Team Zestlife secured an overall 2nd place position after three days of running, while Team ProNutro Champs finished third.

Kathleen Shuttleworth and Nicole Marais of Team ProNutro JAG secured their hatrick win of the weekend, completing 90km of trail running over a three day time period in a combined time of 08hours39minutes46seconds.  Shuttleworth finds team racing to be very stressful.  “The ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun isn’t just physically demanding there’s a psychological factor to it.  If you have a bad day you’re not just disappointing yourself, but letting your partner down as well.  Stage three featured a nice run route.  Going into the stage with a big cushion over the second team meant that we could relax and just run it out. With ProNutro sponsoring our entry this year, crossing the finish line first meant so much more for us,” says Suttleworth.  Team Girls Can Run secured an overall 2nd place position after three days of running, while Team Wishlist finished third.

Husband and wife duo Iain and Su Don-Wauchope of Team Mountain Splendour once again took gold in the mixed team category after completing the weekend’s racing in a combined time of 08hours10minutes08seconds.  For Su successfully defending their title was a great experience.  “Today was really tough.  Anita and Mazu took off on the first hill.  We managed to make up time, had the course been just a bit longer we just might have caught them.  That’s the nature of trail running I guess, there will never be an outright winner and that’s what makes it exciting.  The ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun is an awesome event.  The course had lovely deviation and was phenomenally well marked.  The marshals on route were also always smiling and showing support.  Iain and I definitely hope to be back next year,” says Don- Wauchope.   Team Arabella Mixed secured an overall 2nd place position after three days of running, while Team Inov8 Gauteng Trail Stars finished third.

The ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance is a three day stage trail run that sees teams of two (male/female/mixed) battling it out on a route varying in distance between 25-35km each day.

Stage Three treated runners to magnificent views of the ocean.  After serious mountain running, the trail running started, heading down towards Kleinmond via one of the largest Protea cultivating farms in the country.
