Just over 450 adventure athletes gathered at Phisantekraal (Koeberg Road, Durbanville) on Saturday, 04 May 2013 to take part in the fast paced Durbanville Triathlon, the last triathlon of the season. Theo Blignaut was on top form in the men’s race, while Robyn Williams was the lady to watch out for on the day.
“It feels great to be back,” says an elated Blignaut. “Two months ago I was at a point where I was considering quitting, but after competing today I remember what I love about the sport. I felt good on the swim, not overcooking it and just getting into a rhythm. On the bike I kept my pace, riding conservatively. Bradley Weiss managed to catch me and we road together into transition. I felt good on the run. I’m a big guy so I don’t run too hard on the hills, making up time on the down hills. The Durbanville Triathlon is a great event. We need more of these in the Western Cape. I’ll definitely be back next year”. Blignaut completed the 1000m swim, 24km mountain bike and 8km trail run in an impressive combined time of 01hour31minutes03seconds. Bradley Weiss came in second, while Cornel Herbst finished third.
For Williams, a swimmer turned triathlete, the Durbanville Triathlon proved to be a lot of fun. “I gave it stick on the swim and managed to exit the water in second place. I worked really hard on the mountain bike, my weakest discipline, while on the run I gave my all. To take part in triathlons you need to be a well rounded athlete. I’m still finding my feet between recently moving to Stellenbosch, training and completing my masters in financial risk management. Finding time for everything is really hard. Going into Winter soon, with the Durbanville Triathlon being the last triathlon of the season I wanted to get in one last race and it was absolutely fantastic,” says Williams, who completed the 1000m swim, 24km mountain bike and 8km trail run in a well deserved time of 01hour46minutes20seconds. Colleen De Oliveira came in second, while Madelie Van Der Westhuizen finished third.
Pieter Malan took gold in the men’s category of the Durbanville Triathlon Half race with a finishing time of 56minutes34seconds. Werner Bruckner came in second, while Wilhelm Kuun finished third.
Famke Allan was victorious in the women’s category of the Durbanville Triathlon Half race with a finishing time of 01hour29seconds. Nina Swiegelaar came in second, while Helena Stoltz finished third.
