The Spur Cape Summer Trail Series™ kicked off Wednesday evening as more than 900 trail runners descended on the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. This race is already known as the toughest one of the Series but the soaring temperatures made it an exceptionally difficult day out for most.
However, the winners made it look easy as they stormed up the first monster hill, leaving the majority of the field in their dust. Bernard Rukadza was the winner of the 12.2km long course Championship race in 57:29, with Katya Soggot winning the ladies race in 1:09:09.
Considering the scorching conditions, Llewelyn Jacobs ran a superb race in the short course Challenge to win the 8.4km race in an excellent time of 38:04. The talented young Megan Leslie showed her class once again, storming home as the first lady in a time of 44:38.
Though the heat made it an extremely tough outing for everyone the incredible sunset that decorated the skies made all the effort worth it and it was the perfect way to get the new year kicked off.
