Evans for Xterra Knysna 2012

Kevin Evans aims at Xterra Knysna 2012

Kevin Evans aims at Xterra Knysna 2012

Former multiple SA mountain biking champion, Kevin Evans will be gunning for his second XTERRA victory on Thursday, 12 July 2012 when he toes the line at the magnificent PEZULA Private Estate’s Field of Dreams (Knysna) to take on his third consecutive TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Knysna presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT.

Evans took gold in 2010 at his XTERRA Knysna debut.  In 2011 however he had to settle for silver finishing second to XTERRA legend Conrad Stoltz.   “I can’t believe that this will be my third XTERRA Knysna,” says Evans. “I reckon that PEZULA is one of the best venues for an event of this nature.  It is great for competitors and spectators alike, plus the Field of Dreams has always held good memories for me.  I’m competitive by nature, so my competitive spirit definitely kicks in at XTERRA as well.  I find the runs, in particular the second run, to be very tough.  The runs are both physically demanding and technical which makes it tough once the body is tired.  The ride is a great route, challenging yet beautiful in the forest.  I used to do duathlons when I was younger, so I know the feeling of going from run to bike to run.  Luckily the distances are manageable, so for me the pain comes in the follow up days.  I would obviously love to take gold on the day however there are athletes that specialize in this sport, so I can never take anything for granted. Of course if Conrad, our World Champion, takes to the start I’ll aim for second place,” laughs Evans.

Evans will face tough competition from XTERRA newcomer Stuart Marais and German XTERRA warrior Nico Pfitzenmaier.

Forming part of the much loved Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival, XTERRA Full athletes will need to tackle a 3km trail run, 23km mountain bike and 7km trail run, while XTERRA Lite athletes will be faced with the same challenge, but just over a shorter distance of 3km trail run, 12.5km mountain bike and a 3km trail run.  All three legs of the XTERRA Full and XTERRA Lite will take place in and around the spectacular PEZULA Private Estate.
