Tsungai Mwanengeni and Bernard Rakudza of Team ProNutro Men’s set a blistering pace during Stage One of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance in Kleinmond on Friday, 06 May 2011. Team Hi-Tec Infinity Girls took gold in the ladies category, while Team ProNutro mixed were victorious in their category.
According to Mwanengeni Stage One’s route was exceptionally beautiful. “Our strategy for today was to start fast. We wanted to build as large a gap as possible on the flats so that we could take it easy on the climbs. We basically have the same strategy for tomorrow. Ideally we’d like to win both the remaining stages,” says Mwanengeni. Team ProNutro Men’s completed the 23.7km route in an impressive time of 01hour53mins54secs. Team Velocity Sports Lab came in second, while Team Hammer Nutrition finished third.
For Jeannie Bomford of Team Hi-Tec Infinity Girls the section through the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens was truly magnificent. “Today’s route had the perfect balance between technical, rocky sections and climbs. We really had a blissful day out on the trails and we couldn’t have asked for better weather conditions. Stage two features a new and exciting route. It’s going to be a long day. Our plan is to secure and maintain a good position from the start,” says Bomford. Team Hi-Tec Infinity Girls crossed the finish line in 02hours11mins13secs. Team Sport Forty came in second, while Team Road Runners finished third.
Husband and wife duo, Iain and Su Don-Wauchope of Team ProNutro Mixed took no prisoners on Stage One of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance. For Su the race was extra special as it was the first time in three years that she and Iain could race together. “The route was absolutely beautiful. We just don’t have this quality of trails in KZN. Iain is a bit of a mountain goat, as a result I was literally chasing him all the way. Survival is definitely our strategy for tomorrow,” laughs Su. Team ProNutro Mixed boasts a magnificent finishing time of 02hours02mins49secs. Team Pure Planet Racing Presented by Fairbairn came in second, while Team Puma finished third.
