Rupanga, Soggot conquer Silvermine Mountain

silvermine mountain trail 2015

It was a picture perfect day as a packed field lined up to take on the third 34km Spur Silvermine Mountain XL trail race at the beautiful Silvermine Nature Reserve.

With names such as Nicholas Rupanga, Dion Middelkoop, Chad Gordon and Katya Soggot at the start line, it was sure that the racing would be as hot as the temperatures and we were not disappointed.

Rupanga had his work cut out and could only pull away from his shadow for the day, Chad Gordon, on the final climb of the day. He held on to this lead to finish about two minutes ahead of Gordon in a time of 2:44:48.

Soggot once again proved her dominance in women’s trail running by finishing about 20 minutes ahead of the second placed lady and improving her own record by almost 19 minutes. She crossed the line in an incredible 3:02:59 to take her third straight win at this race.

The race also provided an option for those not inclined to take on a full 34km on their own and the racing in the team category proved as exciting as the solo race. The Llandudno Surf teams – Llandudno Surf Lifesavers Running Team and Llandudno Surf Ladies – claimed top spot in the men’s and ladies’ team categories. Michael de Kwaadsteniet and Robert Shaff teamed up and secured victory in a time of 2:59:57, while the Llandudno Surf Ladies, Mariella Dierks and Linda Detering were miles ahead of any competition in a time of 3:15:36. The mixed team category was also comfortably won by Annei Kloppers and Frikkie Bruwer from Team Marco Polo in a time of 3:25:47.

The Spur Cape Summer Trail Series™ now returns to its normal format as the Series moves to Oak Valley in two weeks’ time on 22 February for a long, short and XL route. Entries for this event are still open and can be found at www.trailseries.co.za.

A big thank you to all the runners who joined us on Saturday and to our amazing sponsors who make these events extra special, Spur Steak Ranches, adidas, BOS Ice Tea, Protea Hotels and Graham Beck Wines.
