Camperdown

Camperdown, KZN, early enough on the down Comrades run, in the tough zone of the Up, is named after the farm on which it is built; which was named after one of the Camperdowns in Scotland; which were named for a victory of the British Royal Navy under Admiral Robert Duncan, of Dundee, Scotland, over the Dutch in the sea off Camperduin, Netherlands.

All of this I got to know because I ran the beach and dunes of Camperduin invited my friend Hans Koeleman, the Netherlands International Ambassador of the Comrades Marathon.

Ours is  a friendship born over seas of mutual affection for the Comrades Marathon.

That’s what this ultimate event also went and did.
