The streets of Stellenbosch came alive with excitement on Thursday, 09 August 2012 when over 4900 runners and walkers showed solidarity in celebration of National Woman’s Day by taking part in the Totalsports Ladies Race held annually at Coetzenburg Stadium, Stellenbosch.
Bulelwa Simae (running for Nedbank) was the Stellenbosch runner to beat. According to Simae the Totalsports Ladies Race was fantastic. “The route was nice and flat and the weather was just perfect with no rain. I knew that with these conditions I had a chance. It’s actually challenging competing only against ladies. Usually the women hide behind the men, but I was ok with the challenge and really enjoyed chasing them down. Although the race was tough, I am really happy with my performance today. I’ll definitely be back next year,” says Simae, who completed the 10km route in an impressive time of 36minutes25seconds. Thozama April came in 2nd, while Nicole Marais finished 3rd.
Female pop sensation, Shelley Gordon had the crowds on their feet in Johannesburg and Stellenbosch respectively, serenading ladies once they’d crossed the finish line.
Runners/walkers could choose between a fun 5km run/walk and a 10km run/walk.
