Drakensberg Couple aim for success in AfricanX

Kleinmond ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun

Kleinmond ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun

Husband and wife duo, Iain and Su Don-Wauchope (Central Drakensberg) will be one of the top five teams to look out for in Kleinmond this coming weekend (06 – 08 May 2011) when they take on the popular ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance.

According to the couple, the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun is the most talked about event amongst all trail runners.  “The AfricanX Trailrun is just one of those must do events.  We’re expecting awesome trails, wonderful scenery and a great race village atmosphere.  A three day stage race is a brilliant idea and it is about time trail running catches up with the mountain biking stage races.  Stage races are a fantastic way of getting to know other athletes.  Dissecting a race and sharing war stories over dinner builds friendships”.

According to Su, she enjoys racing with her husband.  “Iain is in high demand as a race partner for many events, this time I was quick and asked him to run with me before someone else snapped him up.  I have a background in running and like to think I have a good balance between speed and stamina.  Iain, on the other hand, is a team player and is a strong partner.  He has the ability to make you believe in yourself and achieve better results,” says Su.

For Iain the best part about a pair’s stage race is that it provides them with the incentive to organise babysitters and do some training together.  “Racing together as a married couple means that shared experiences are extra special.  The biggest challenge will be ensuring that we both run within a comfortable range.  If you are forced to run to fast you bomb out, while running at a pace far slower than you are used to can be very tiring.  My strengths lie in the climbs and tough conditions, while Su has great tenacity and she hates other girls beating her,” laughs Iain.
