The streets of Durban, Stellenbosch and Johannesburg will come alive on Sunday, 31 July 2011 (Durban) and Tuesday, 09 August 2011 (Stellenbosch and Johannesburg) when runners, joggers and walkers support National Women’s Day by taking part in the Totalsports Ladies Race.  Runners will be pleased to hear that a portion of their entry fee will be donated to the Jes Foord Foundation (Durban), the JAG Foundation (Stellenbosch) and Nanga Vhutshilo (Johannesburg).

DURBAN ~ Established in 2008, the Jes Foord Foundation offers free counselling and support for rape victims.  According to Justin De Beer, Marketing Manager of The Jes Foord Foundation, it is amazing to be involved with an event that is held in honour of South African women.  “Not enough is done to uplift the value of our women and their overall worth in our communities.  We are absolutely delighted to be involved with the Totalsports Ladies Race.  As a charity funding is always needed to maintain our work within the community.  We will definitely make good use of the donation received from the Totalsports Ladies Race”, says De Beer.

“Currently the Jes Foord Foundation has a number of projects on the go”, continues De Beer.  “One of our biggest challenges is to raise money to train councillors and community members. Our current focus is on child Safety Officer training.  We have also teamed up with operation Bobbi Bear who offer a rescue and support service for children that have been raped.  Although  based in Hillcrest, the Jes Foord Foundation focuses on all areas in KZN from Howick Down to Durban, and then from Stanger down to Port Shepstone”.

STELLENBOSCH ~ The JAG Foundation, South Africa’s leading sports and education organization, has once again been selected as the benefiting charity of the Stellenbosch leg of this much loved event.

According to Elana Meyer, CEO of the JAG Foundation, the Totalsports Ladies Race is one of the few unique events that the JAG programme girls have the opportunity to participate in.  “It’s tough for kids today, especially in South African townships.  Alcohol and drug abuse is rife, and there is a lot of peer pressure to belong to a gang. The JAG Foundation strives to offer an alternative”.

Meyer comments further: “We work with children under 12, who can still be positively influenced to make healthy lifestyle choices.  After 12, it’s too late, as most children have then entered gang structures, making rehabilitation near impossible. Through our mentoring, coaching, learning and play programmes we teach good values and enhance self-esteem, self discipline, focus and sportsmanship.  Currently just under 6000 children form part of our various running programmes, JAG Runners and Mighty Metres.  By participating  in our programmes and further developing their skills through Mighty Meters, ProNutro JAGRunners, Mighty Meters, JAGRiders, JAGRugby and JAG Water Polo a number of our children have excelled and received sponsorships to study at Bishops, SACS and Pinelands High School to name a few.  Irrespective of the rain, our JAG Girls really enjoyed taking part at the 2010 race.  They also thoroughly enjoyed the performance by Idols singer Jody Williams.  Some of the girls were even dancing along to the music.  I think it’s great to celebrate being a woman and the Totalsports Ladies Race offers an awesome opportunity to do so.”

JOHANNESBURG ~ A community-based positive life programme, Nanga Vhutshilo focuses on people living with HIV and AIDS.  According to Sibongile Mazibuko, Founder and Director of Nanga Vhutshilo, the programme offers support to children in need of care, their caregivers and families.  “Nanga Vhutshilo means ‘choose life’ in Tshivenda and has been in operation since 2006. We provide food and other essential services to over 300 children in need, many who are HIV positive or have lost their parents due to aids”.

“We are really excited to be chosen as the official charity of the 2011 Totalsports Ladies Race in Emmerentia,” continues Mazibuko.  “We are a ‘Positive Living Centre’, believing in healthy living.  We are constantly encouraging people living with HIV and aids and other illnesses to exercise and eat nutritious meals.  Being a community developer, I truly believe in the saying that says “When you teach a woman you are teaching a nation”, so for me honouring women is honouring the nation”.

Nanga Vhutshilo was founded on the premises of Nonto Primary School in Dlamini 2, Soweto and focuses on areas near Dlamini including Rockville and White City.
