Comrades gold medallist Johan Oosthuizen will be part of the biggest marathon field since 2005 for the 44th Peninsula Marathon this Sunday 20 February 2011.

The event will have the biggest combined field in the event’s history, with just under 3 500 runners taking part – 2 062 in the marathon and 1 372 in the half, and entries are still being captured.  The biggest field for the marathon was recorded in 2005 when 2 150 participants entered.Mpumalanga runner Oosthuizen will be running his first Peninsula as part of his preparation for Comrades later this year.  Last year’s winner Mthandazo Qhina has not entered but second placed Zondwa Nombexeza, together with Clifford Drury (4th) and Luyanda Mapoyi (5th) will all be at the start line on Sunday.  The women’s field appears to be wide open with none of the top four from last year returning to run again.

The race promises to deliver some interesting times and, if the weather plays along, the times should be quick, as the event returns to faster traditional route that runners have grown familiar with over the years.

The marathon starts at 05h15 in Main road, Green Point, opposite Cape Town Stadium, while the half marathon starts at 07h00 at the Bergvliet Sports Club off Ladies Mile Road.  Both routes take runners along the Main Road through to the finish at the Naval Sports Grounds in Simonstown.

Entries for the event have already closed and no late entries will be accepted.  Registration and number collection takes place this Saturday 19 February at various venues, which include Sportsmans Warehouse in Rondebosch and Tygervalley, as well as New Balance outlet store in Mocke Road, Diep River.  Upgrades and downgrades will be allowed for a nominal fee of R10.
