1.  We are counting down days till Comrades Marathon on the 2nd of June, 17 to be exact. How has the training been going?

My training has been excellent this year. In 2011 I got my best up run result, so based on that result and the training I did then , I looked at the programme and made some changes here and there, so let’s see if it all comes together on the day. But I feel good and it’s now time to recover and wait. At least the early mornings and long runs are over for now. These are always hard but when you do them it makes you mentally strong as well. Yes it is close now to race day. The training has been fine. I feel that I am in as good shape I was at the last up run. I am over my calf injury I got at Two Oceans so it was hard work and I had to catch up training, but I can feel my body is good now. The legendary Zola Budd will be part of a field of nearly 20000 athletes to take to the road for the 2013 Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 2 June.

Budd completed her first ever ultra-marathon last year alongside good friend and Comrades veteran Bruce Fordyce who finished his thirtieth race.  The pair ran the last 25 kilometres of the race side by side to finish in a time of 8 hours 6 minutes and 9 seconds, which secured bronze medals for both. Thursday, 2 May 2013 – The 23 year old Lebogang Shange from Central Gauteng not only won the SA Championships, but travelled to Mauritius less than a week later where he also won the Africa Race Walking Championships.  As the Africa Champion and according to the IAAF criteria, he is now considered to have automatically qualified for the World Championships in Russia in August where he is hoping to break the SA record. Novice runner David Gatebe beat a highly competitive field at the 44th Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon today in a time of 03:08:54. Gatebe, who is a sporting officer at the Implats Mine in Rustenburg, says the strong winds did not play a major role in his run. “I decided to pull away from the other runners after about 34km and managed to keep ahead. It’s a great feeling to win and I am very happy. I’m now heading to the Comrades Marathon in June and hope to repeat my success there.” [Read more...]
