Evans re-elected to IAU Council

IAU - International Association of Ultra runners

IAU - International Association of Ultra runners

Athletics South Africa President, James Evans, has been re-elected for a further four-year term as the Area Representative for Africa and Oceania on the Executive Council of the International Association of Ultra runners (IAU).  He was first elected to the position in 2008.

During his first tenure on the Council the number of countries from Africa affiliated to the IAU doubled, with Kenya being the latest member to join.

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon was awarded Gold Label Status in 2012 and a number of South African races were also awarded IAU labeled status. The label association means that performances at South African events are included on the international statistics lists. The net effect of this inclusion is that results from Africa, specifically Southern Africa, and Australia have started to dominate the 50km international lists.

South Africa also participated at the 2011 World 100km Championships in 2011, where Lindsey van Aswegen won the bronze medal.

Evans’ re-election adds to the growing number of positions which South Africans are filling on World and African Athletics bodies.
