In the category for Sport Participation event of the year the Comrades Marathon came out tops against five top events in South Africa which included the Bidvest Unity Walk, Discovery 702 Walk the Talk, JP Morgan Corporate Challenge, the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.

Oscar Pistorius, also known as the Blade Runner, proved again that disability should not stand in the way of success when he was nominated and won the award in the category for Outstanding Contribution to South African Sport.

“It is an honour for us to have the sport of athletics win two awards at such a prestigious award ceremony.  It just shows the passion for the sport in our country and we should definitely build on that and go even bigger in the years to come,” said Frik Vermaak, Chief Executive Officer of Athletics South Africa who attended the awards.

The judging Panel, consisting of 15 influential people from different walks of life featured some of the leading personalities in the industry.  Led by former SA rugby captain Bobby Skinstad, the panel included amongst others Gideon Sam, President of the South Africa Sports Confederation & Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Danny Jordaan, CEO of 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa and Nunu Ntshingila, CEO of Oglivy South Africa.
