Double amputee Oscar Pistorius ran under the Olympic Qualifying time of 45.30sec at the Gauteng North Provincial Championships in Pretoria on Saturday, 17 March. Pistorius competed in the men’s 400m and was timed at 45.20sec.
The 25 year-old is now the first South African track and field athlete to have reached the qualifying time this year. He still has to run the qualifying standard at an international meeting after 31 March as agreed with SASCOC (The South African Sports and Olympic Committee) and also compete at the SA Senior Championships in Port Elizabeth on 13-14 April.
Pistorius competed at the World Championships in Deagu in 2011 where he was a part of the 4x400m relay team that broke the South African record and also won the silver medal.
