South Africa Wrap Up World Juniors

South Africa’s junior team finished the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona on a quiet note with no medals added to their tally for the Championships.

Julia du Plessis (16) in her first ever World Championships final finished in 12^th position in the high jump while the women’s 4x400m team finished in 9^th place in their final.

Du Plessis who qualified for the final in  confident  manner with a jump of 1.82m struggled and after a first time clearance at the opening height of 1.68m  cleared  1.73m with her second  attempt and 1,78m with her third attempt before bowing out at 1,82m.

The high jump gold medal was won by Italy’s Alessia Trost with a height of 1.91m.

The South African relay team consisting of Justine Palframan, Janet Seeliger, Ane Fourie and Stephanie Wicksell posted a time of 3:40. 31.

South Africa won two bronze medals by Gerhard de Beer in the discus and Morne Moolman in the javelin at the Championships while Justine Palframan bettered the 19 year old record of Myrtle Simpson- Bothma in the 400 metres.

Young Lezaan Jordaan also excelled in the shot put by qualifying for the final and to improve her previous personal best  distance three times.

The team will arrive back in South Africa tomorrow (17 July 2012) at 16:25 on flight EK763.
