Van Zyl, Moolman continue Javelin Rivalry

Reinhard van Zyl

World Javelin Youth Champion, Reinhard van Zyl missed much of the season due to an elbow injury. During his absence, rival Morne Moolman won the South Africa Junior Title. The rivalry though will be renewed in Port Elizabeth on Friday 13 April. Morne Moolman easily won the SA Junior title in Germiston in the absence of van Zyl.

Van Zyl wants to make use of the little opportunity coming his way in order to achieve the qualifying standard for the World Junior Championships. The target van Zyl is looking for is 70.50m and he wants to achieve this with literally one attempt due to his elbow is not fully recovered yet.  “It is very sore so I am going to make the most of my first attempt.  I can’t afford to injure my elbow more but at least there is time for rehab if I manage to qualify now,” said Van Zyl.  Moolman has already reached the qualifying standard for the World Junior Championships in the javelin throw with a 75.08m throw at Yellow Pages II in Potchefstroom.

With top seniors in the line-up there will certainly be the opportunity to push Van Zyl towards his target but allowing him minimum attempts in order to reach the qualifying standard.

The 21 year-old Jayson Henning is starting to show form in 2012 with a new personal best of 74.95m at the Central North West Provincial Championships on 5 March.  After this he finished 4th at Yellow Pages II in Potchefstroom behind Morne Moolman. Henning then won at the Yellow Pages Interclub on 5 April with a 72.15m attempt ahead of Robert Oosthuizen (70.15m) who is also coming back from a shoulder injury.  Other names include Rocco van Rooyen and Hardus Pienaar

The SA Senior Championships will take place from 13-14 April at the Xerox NMMU Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay. Proceedings on Friday will start at 09:15. The last event of the day will start at 17:00. The program on the final day, 14 April, will start at 06:30 with the last event at 17:25.
