Sunette Viljoen new SA Javelin Record

Twenty eight year old Sunette Viljoen successfully defended her World Student title in Shenzhen, China on 18 August, 2011 with a throw of 66.47m to set a new South African and African Record.

Viljoen opened the competition with a no-throw before unleashing her mammoth effort in the second round to effectively end the competition as her nearest rival, Marina Maximova from Russia was only able to hit 59.87m.

Viljoen hit the 60m mark again in the 5th round with a distance of 60.36m. The win and the distance will go a long way to boosting the confidence of Viljoen as she heads off to Daegu, Korea for the World Championships. Her sequence was as follows:

Rnd1         Rnd2         Rnd3         Rnd4                 Rnd5                 Rnd6

X            66.47m         x           57.46m              60.36m              58.82m

The performance in Shenzen sees her move to 4th on the World Ranking lists behind Barbora Spotakova (CZE – 69.45m), Christine Obergfoell (GER – 68.86M) and Mariya Abakumova (RUS – 67.98m).
