van Blerk repeats SPAR win
Irvette van Blerk took no hostages in winning the 22nd Durban SPAR Women’s race in a new personal best time of 32 minutes 50 seconds.
Van Blerk took the lead from the gun and blasted through the first kilometre in threeminutes 5 seconds leaving the country’s top athletes in her wake. Zimbabwean Rutendo Nyahora, 2009 winner Rene Kalmer and Zintle Xiniwe of Western Cape were the only runners able to hang to van Blerks tail as they turned onto Snell Parade to run down the beachfront. The Battle for Grand Prix points
South Africa – The eventual winner of the SPAR Grand Prix could well be decided this weekend, when the Durban leg of the SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge takes place.
The Durban race is midway through the five-race series. The runner with the most points after all five Challenge races have been run will pocket R60 000. The runner-up takes home R30 000 and the third placed athlete receives R15 000. There are cash prizes for the top 20 on the leaderboard, while the top three in the various age categories also receive prize money.
At this stage, last year’s Grand Prix winner Irvette van Blerk (Nedbank CGA) is well in the lead with 47 points, after finishing second in the Port Elizabeth race last month and fourth in Cape Town in April. She has a 13-point lead over Zintle Xiniwe (Nedbank WP), who came third in Cape Town and fifth in Port Elizabeth. [Read more...]
Durban Women’s Events for Moses Mabhida Stadium
The ever-popular annual Durban SPAR Women’s 10/5km has moved forward a few months this year and now takes place on Sunday, June 19 once again at the People’s Park at the city’s iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium.
This event is a major drawcard for social runners and walkers and also attracts top seeded athletes who compete in the SPAR Women’s 10/5km Grand Prix Series. Last year Gauteng’s Irvette van Blerk (Nedbank) won the Durban race in a time of 33.45 and she also won the Grand Prix having bagged three races out of a total of five. This year the Durban race offers a first prize of R10 000 and the Grand Prix winner will take home R60 000 in winnings. [Read more...]
