Kalmer and Phalula take Titles

Rene Kalmer Stellenbosch Ladies Race 2011

Rene Kalmer Stellenbosch Ladies Race 2011

Thousands of ladies joined forces on Tuesday, 09 August 2011 in support of National Women’s Day by taking part in the much anticipated Totalsports Ladies Race.  Rene Kalmer and Lebo Phalula were the ladies to beat in Stellenbosch and Johannesburg respectively.

According to Kalmer, the support received in Stellenbosch was amazing.  “The Totalsports Ladies Race Stellenbosch route is definitely not the easiest route that you’ll find in Stellenbosch.   Windy conditions experienced on the day  added to the toughness of the race.  We received the most amazing support from spectators with students actually coming out in their pyjamas to motivate us.  I’ll definitely be back next year”, says Kalmer who represents the Nedbank Running Club.  Kalmer’s winning time was 34minutes04seconds.  Zintle Xiniwe came in second, while Bulelwa Simae  finished third.

For Lebo Phalula winning the 10km Totalsports Ladies Race in Johannesburg came as a complete surprise.  “I didn’t expect to win today as there were so many top runners that took part.  The route was excellent with runners receiving the most amazing support from spectators.  I will definitely come back next year as I now have a title to defend”, says Phalula who completed the 10km Race in an impressive time of 35minutes50seconds.  Irvette van Blerk came in second, while Onnele Dintwe finished third.
