Cape Town, 15 September 2019 – Precious Mashele goes by the name Mr 10km for a reason. The 28-year-old won his third consecutive Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 10km Peace Run today, coming home in 28:36. Mashele has made it a habit of winning 10km races in South Africa and was ecstatic with his win, throwing a big thumbs up as he crossed the finish line.

A new route that took out seven corners was always going to ensure a fast time as the top three men broke 29 minutes. Mashele made his move at the 6km mark to break away from Mbuleli Mathanga and training partner, Desmond Mokgobu. Mathanga was able to get away from Mokgobu in the final kilometre.

“I am really happy. It is my third win in a row here and I love coming to Cape Town. I know I am now in really good shape to end off my year with a very fast time,” said Mashele who is looking to end his season in Durban in October.

Fortunate Chidzivo smashes CTM 10km course record

The ladies race was dominated by Zimbabwe’s Fortunate Chidzivo who has made Cape Town her home and is a regular winner in the Mother City. Chidzivo took control of the race from the gun, flying home in 32:26 for a new Zimbabwe National Record and a massive personal best (previous best 33:49).

Chidzivo was in tears as she crossed the line. “I am so happy. I have been working really hard this year and this is such a weight off my shoulders. I did not think I could go so fast, so I am extremely happy.”

Kesa Molotsane continues her return to form; she finished second in 33:30 while Rutendo Nyahora rounded out the podium (33:50).

“It is incredible to see just how the standard in both the men’s and women’s 10km have improved in the last few years. 10km speed determines just how good you can be in the marathon, so I am excited to see the depth currently in South Africa,” said race ambassador, Elana van Zyl-Meyer.

The 10km Peace Run, part of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon weekend festival, is one of the most popular 10km races in South Africa, attracting a large field of approximately 8500 participants.

Africa is my home, this is my race. It’s Cape Town, must run it!
