Thuso Mpuang gave himself a huge boost ahead of the World Championships in Deagu Korea, when he won the silver medal in the men’s 200m final at the World Student Championships.
Mpuang ran his second fastest time of 2011 to secure the silver when he crossed the line in 20.59sec behind the fast finishing Rasheed Dwyer of Jamaica. Running in lane 5, Mpuang had the second best reaction time out of the blocks (0.168sec) behind Britains James Adekunle Alaka who was out in 0.160sec. The Britain though faded to fourth.
Dwyer came past Mpuang in the home-straight and flew away from the South African to win in 20.20sec – a huge personal best. Mpuang’s form will be great news for South Africa ahead of the World Championships, especially for the 4x100m relay where Mpuang will be a key participant.
His silver comes in the wake of the Gold and Bronze in the Women’s javelin of Sunette Viljoen and Justine Robbeson on Thursday 18 August. Steven Mokoka finished second in the men’s 10 000m behind the Japanese Suguru Osaka, clocking 28:53.09.
