The South African athletics team had an impressive start to the Zone 6 Games in Lusaka, Zambia, winning 11 medals on the first day, of which six were gold.
The South African sprinters dominated the both the men’s and women’s 100m races, with clean sweeps in both events. And to crown a superb performance by the country, Akani Simbini set a new South African Junior Record of 10.19sec, smashing the previous record of 10.30 set by Wilhelm van der Vijver in Pretoria on 18 April 2008. Chante van Tonder won the gold medal in the women’s race.
