Athletics South Africa has announced a junior team of 33 athletes to compete at the CAA Southern Region Junior Championships to take place in Windhoek, Namibia on 28 and 19 April. The date of the Championships has been moved forward and will no longer take place on 4 and 5 May.
Amongst the men are athletes such as Siphelo Ngqabaza and Fana Mofokeng (FS). Both athletes delivered outstanding performances at the Yellow Pages SA Junior, Youth and Schools Championships in Germiston from 29-31 April 2012 with Ngqabaza qualifying not only in the 100m but also in the 200m. Other men in the team include the SA Javelin Youth Record holder and World Championships silver medallist Morne Moolman, Jan-Louw Kotze and Gerhard de Beer in the Discus Throw, Pieter Conradie in the 400m and SA Youth record holder in the Octathlon, Lee vd Berg competing in the 110m hurdles.
Julia du Plessis became the 3rd best youth high jump athlete in South African history after clearing 1.88m; a height that would’ve ranked her number one in the world in 2011. Others in the team include former youth athletes Phillipa van der Merwe in the 100m alongside the new SA Junior Champion Nabeela Parker, Spephanie Wicksell in the 400m, 800m athlete Thato Makhafola and Izelle Nieuhoff running 400m hurdles.
