Former World Champion and current World Hammer Throw Record holder, Germany’s Betty Heidler will be lining up at the Yellow Pages Interprovincial meeting in Germiston on Saturday 25 February.
Heidler is in the country, along with countrywoman Kathrin Klaas and Mareike Nannen, to prepare for the 2012 season and is keen to get in some early competition practice. Heidler is a regular at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria for her international preparation, so the Interprovincial on Saturday is the perfect opportunity to simulate a competition environment without the pressure of an international meet full of World Championship Medallists and Olympic Medallists.
Heidler won the World Title in 2007 and two silver Medals at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships. The German was favourite to win the World Title in 2011 after her 79.42m World Record throw in Halle, Germany on 21 May. Heidler also won the European title in 2011 and is now chasing the only title she has still to win, the Olympic Title.
Joining Heidler in Pretoria for training and in the competition on Saturday are Kathrin Klaas and Mareike Nannen. Klaas has finished 4th at the World Championships in 2009 and 7th in 2011 and boasts best of 75.48m, whilst Nannen is the new kid on the block. At 22 years she is only beginning her Hammer Throw career, yet already has gone over 60m. Her best of 61.25m came in 2010 at the St Wendel Meeting in July that year.
