Kalmer for Durban Race

One of South Africa’s top road and track athletes, Rene Kalmer will be seen in action at the inaugural Durban leg of the Totalsports Ladies Race that will take place at Kingspark Athletics Stadium on Sunday, 31 July 2011.
Earlier this year Kalmer, representing the Nedbank Running Club, qualified for the World Championship when she finished fifth in her first international marathon in Prague.  According to Kalmer, she enjoys both the long and short distances.  “Up until last year I specialised in the 1500m, but this year I started focussing more on marathons.  I still have a lot to learn, but I am really excited by the new challenge.  I’ll be using the Totalsports Ladies Race in Durban and Stellenbosch as a test to see whether my marathon training for the World Championship is up to schedule,” says Kalmer.

“The World Champs will take place in Daegu, South Korea from 27 August until 04 September,” continues Kalmer.  “ I am competing on the first day and am really excited as it will be the first time in a decade that a ladies team will be representing South Africa in the marathon.  It will also be great experience for next year’s Olympic Games in London.   I’m looking forward to taking part at the Totalsports Ladies Race.  I can’t think of a better way to celebrate National Women’s Day, because it is all about the ladies on this day.”

Kalmer will face tough competition from fellow World Marathon Champs team member, Tanith Maxwell.
