Bailey, Brimble take Stage One

Greylings

Competition was heated in the men’s race during Stage One of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance on Friday, 14 March 2014.  Starting and finishing at the Houw Hoek Inn, there was a constant tussle at the front end of the men’s race with Kane Reilly and Thabang Madiba (Salomon Men) and Michael Bailey and Ben Brimble (Nedbank/Northface) refusing to throw in the towel.

Michael Bailey and Ben Brimble (Nedbank/Northface) persevered till the end claiming the Stage One victory in an impressive time of 02 hours 16 minutes 14 seconds.  According to Bailey, the stage was tough.  “We ran with Thabang Madiba and Kane Reilly for more than half of the route.  Thabang is really fast on the down hills, while Ben and I kept it steady on the up hills.  It was only when we had 6 to 7km to go that we broke away.   I love these trails, they suit our running styles.  Finishing first is nice as it gives you confidence.  We plan on going hard tomorrow and build on our lead,” says Bailey.  Thabang Madiba and Kane Reilly (Salomon Men) came in second, while Bernard Rakudza and AJ Calitz (Contego K-Way) finished third.

Landie and Christiaan Greyling (Salomon Mixed) claimed victory in the mixed team category, completing Stage One in a well-deserved time of 02 hours 42 minutes 30 seconds.  “I didn’t think it was possible, but the trails are even better than last year,” said a very happy Landie.  “Our goal was just to go out and have fun.  Christiaan is a great supporter, he’s a real winner.  The AfricanX is such a special vibe.  It’s something I can share with my husband.  It’s really special, our happy place”.  Meg Mackenzie and Andrew Erasmus (Team Salomon) came in second, while Marie Wessels and Eddie Lambert (Contego Mixed) finished third.

Katya Soggot and Chantel Nienaber (ProNutro Ladies) were the women’s team to beat on the day completing the Stage One route in a time of 02 hours 48 minutes 31 seconds.  “That was a beautiful route,” said Soggot.  “We had so much fun out there.  The organisation was stunning and I was running with a fun partner, it was just perfect.  Our objective today was to have fun and we did.  Taking first is lovely.  Tomorrow we’ll work hard to hold on to the lead”.  Robyn Kime and Su Don-Wauchope (The North Face) came in second, while Danette Smith and Helene Roux (Team Mizuno) finished third.

Stage One of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance saw runners needing to complete a 33km route that started and finished at the picturesque Houw Hoek Inn.
