Viljoen sets Olympic Standard
On Saturday 17 February at the Gauteng North Provincial Championships Oscar Pistorius became the first South African track and field athlete to reach the Olympic Qualifying standard in the men’s 400m. However, on the same day in another province Sunette Viljoen made her mark.
Pistorius runs Olympic Qualifying time
Double amputee Oscar Pistorius ran under the Olympic Qualifying time of 45.30sec at the Gauteng North Provincial Championships in Pretoria on Saturday, 17 March. Pistorius competed in the men’s 400m and was timed at 45.20sec.
Ayeko leads Ugandan Team
Uganda National Cross Country Champion, Thomas Ayeko will lead the 24 strong Uganda Team to the 2012 Africa Cross Country Championships in Cape Town on Sunday 18 March. Uganda will field a full complement of athletes (6 in each category)
Gelant breaks SA record at World Indoors
Elroy Gelant broke the SA Indoor Record in the men’s 3000m at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey on 9-11 March. Gelant finished 12th in the final but broke Juan van Deventer’s SA Indoor record of 7:49.91 (Moskva, 7 February 2010) when he crossed the line in 7:48.64.
