Chiunye Sisters take on AfricanX

The Chiunye Sisters

The Chiunye Sisters

Zimbabwian born sisters, Delia and Daphne Chiunye will make their stage racing debut the weekend of 19 – 21 April 2013 when they take on the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance, South Africa’s most exciting three day stage trail run.

Delia and Daphne were given an entry for the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun as a gift from long distance running superstar Elana Meyer.   “I met Delia in 2008 when I was looking for an Au Pair for my son Christopher, who was six months old at the time.  Delia started working for us in March that year,” says Meyer.  “Delia took to running rather quickly and ran her first Totalsports Ladies Race in August 2008.  She also started studying through UNISA and is very close to completing her B.comm degree.   Daphne is our Guard Daughter.  She spent three years in our house while she attended Rhenish High School and completed her Matric last year.  Now both Daphne and Delia are out of the house.  Daphne is at Matie, while Delia lives in Kenilworth and will be getting married soon.   They wanted to do something special together before they moved apart, so taking part in the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun will be an extra special event for them”.

According to Delia, she can’t think of anyone else that she’d like to team up with for the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun.  “I first heard about the event the year that Jacques and his brother Mauritz were taking part.  I’m affiliated to Ommidraai Athletic Club.  We train on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.   Daphne and I run together on Saturdays and Sundays, together with Nicholas Rupanga, a professional trail runner who previously won AfricanX.  Nicholas is helping us with our preparation.  Jacques helps us with training, nutrition and injury advice, while Elana assists with all the admin work which included securing our entry.   I’ve watched the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun since 2009 and enjoyed cheering for the teams.  I am really excited to be on the start line this year,” says Delia.

“It’s the lovely experience that attracted Delia and I to the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun,” says Daphne.  “We chose to enter together as we can help each other in both training and during the event.  I have good speed and persistence, while Delia’s strength is endurance.  We make a good team as I keep us going, while she is great at organising races, nutrition, maintaining good health and providing a training programme around our different daily schedules.  I think day three will definitely be the toughest part of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun, but we will help each other through it”.

Be sure to look out for Delia and Daphne at the 2013 ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance.  Their team name will be the PRONUTRO RECRUITS.
