It has been a sad period for athletics in South Africa with the passing of 2 athletes and an administrator, including marathon runner Zolani Ntongana, a former employee of Kwa-zulu Natal Athletics and a runner in Johannesburg.

Athletics South Africa notes with deep regret the passing of one of South Africa’s marathon athletes, Zolani Ntongana, who passed away on Thursday 3 May after being struck by a car in Khayelitsha the previous weekend. Ntongana was admitted to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The 32 year-old finished third at the SA Marathon Championships in George on 25 February and recently placed 8th at the Two Oceans Half Marathon. In 2010 he represented South Africa in the World Half Marathon Championships and the Southern Region Half Marathon Championships, where he finished 26th and 5th respectively. The Western Province runner’s funeral will take place on 12 May in the Eastern Cape.

On Friday 4 May, a 30-year-old female jogger was killed on Hendrick Potgieter road in Strubens Valley while crossing the road. The case is being investigated by the authorities.

As a supporter of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, Athletics SA will continue to engage with the authorities to educate motorists and runners of the dangers presented by the road traffic. Through ongoing awareness campaigns it is hoped that motorists will become more aware of runners.

Sandy Moses, a former employee at Kwa-zulu Natal Athletics, unexpectedly passed away over the weekend due to a heart attack.

Athletics South Africa wishes to extend condolences to all the family and friends of the people mentioned above.
