SA Games highlights, Day 1

Hammer Throw

Hammer Throw

The athletics section of the SA Games started on 5 October in Polokwane in overcast and windy conditions with the sun surfacing as the morning progressed. These games are organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation for the development of sport to the youth of South Africa with the only condition being that the athlete may not have been chosen for any South African team before.

The first event of the morning was the 5000m walk and the title of the best youth race walker in South Africa does not belong to Chanice Klink without reason. This Western Cape athlete once again took the honours and finished ahead of the field when she crossed the line in 28:42.44, more than a minute ahead of her closest competitor. Yolande Appel from KZN finished 2nd while Gauteng’s Tshegofatso Mohlala came 3rd. Their times were 29:52.79 and 30:33.95 respectively. Mohlala improved on the 31:41.79 she set up in Germiston at the SA Championships in April.

Dillan Korkie improved on the 61.49m from the SA Youth and Junior Championships in Germiston as his best attempt measured 63.88m in the boys hammer throw, more than 8 meters further than his closest competitor. Western Cape athlete Hendri Storm also followed as he came 2nd with 55.09m, improving on his previous best of 52.37m (Paarl – 12 March) by more than 2 meters. Third position went to Thomas Dryer from North West with 51.36m.

The girl’s triple jump was dominated by strong winds reaching speeds up to 4.3m/sec from behind. Dineo Mgwenya ensured Mpumalanga their first gold medal in the athletics when one of her jumps reached 11.89m. Gauteng featured strong in the top again with Carina Swiegers 2nd (11.24m) just ahead of Simone van der Merwe (Eastern Cape), her distance measured at 11.21m.

Juan de Swardt and Emile Pellisseur added two medals to Western Cape’s tally as they were the only two athletes competing in the boy’s pole vault. De Swardt finished 1st with 4.30m while Pellisseur cleared 3.70m.

Also both from Western Cape, Jeandre Slabbert and Steven Klue outperformed the field with their big attempts in the boys javelin throw. Both athletes had the crowds behind them in full support. Slabbert’s biggest attempt saw the javelin soaring to 71.87m and the gold medal was never really contended by any other province. Klue took the silver medal (69.94m), beating his closest competitor, Kevin Botha, with more than 5 meters. Botha’s attempt measured 64.32m.

A light drizzle came down on the Peter Mokaba athletics stadium just after midday. Gauteng’s Julia du Plessis claimed victory in the girl’s high jump as she was the only athlete to clear 1.75m, 10cm higher than her closest competitor. Shanon Malotane (Western Cape) took the silver medal (1.65m) while 3rd place was shared between Gauteng’s Chantelle Janse van Rensburg and Leone van Rooyen from the Northern Cape, both succeeding at 1.55m.

The afternoon progressed with the weather changing even more. The drizzle turned into cold rain and the wind picked up even more. Windspeed in the boy’s triple jump reached 6.4m/s from behind. Njabulo Mkhwane took the gold when his best flight was recorded at 14.23m

Njabulo Mkhwane (KZN) produced his best performance since the SA Championships in Germiston and took the gold with his 14.23m effort. Eastern Cape and Western Cape followed with their athletes, Khaya Malotana and Lorenzo Gordon, taking silver and bronze respectively (14.13m and 14.07m).

The girls hammer throw turned out to be a very close competition, especially between the first two positions. Gauteng athlete Sara-Lee Nel finished ahead of the field with just 20cm over Mieke Stander from the Eastern Cape. Nel’s biggest attempt reached 43.20m while Mieke made sure of the silver medal with 43.00m. Another athlete from Gauteng, Chante Loots took bronze (41.71m).

Sane van Zyl from North West took gold in the girls javelin throw with 44.10m while Gauteng’s Larushka Joubert took the silver ahead of Marina Griebenauw from Western Cape. These two recorded distances of 39.36m and 39.13m respectively in wet and windy conditions.

The 100m events saw Gauteng win gold in the girls event and Eastern Cape in the boys.

Amanda Nagel crossed the line 1st in 12.31sec. Eastern Cape was represented by Siphamandla Bingwa (11.11sec). Ariane Nel from North West took silver for the girls while Nabeelah Parker finished third for Western Cape, their times 12.41sec and 12.45sec respectively. Western Cape added another silver to the tally in the boys 100m as Fadhl Sameuls finished a split second ahead of Madonsela (11.32sec and 11.33sec).

Heavy rain started pouring down as the last two events started. The girls 3000m saw athletes lapping each other not far into the race. Kwazule-Natal showed their talent with another gold as Sonto Dlamini took the gold in 11:41.42 despite not being in the top 10 in South Africa. Kyla van Graan took silver while Mpulalanga added another medal to their gold as Glenrose Xaba crossed the line 3rd. Van Graan (GAU) stopped the clock at 11:44.91sec and was followed by Xaba in 11:49.06.

In the boys race Romeo Booysen (Eastern Cape) finished in 8:51.34 for the gold while Limpopo got their first medal when Ludwick Molewa crossed the line 2nd (8:56.73). Abel Mankge from Mpumalanga took bronze in 9:05.89

The points of the combined events were not calculated yet.
