Friday, 15 June 2012 – Tsholofelo Thipe comfortably won the women’s 100m in very cold conditions at the Swedish Grand Prix in Goteborg on Thursday, 14 June.  The SA 100m champion beat Italian athlete Martina Giovanett and Folake Akinyemi from Sweden.  Thipe clocked 11.65sec with Giovanett and Akinyami finishing in 11.79sec and 11.90sec respectively.  South Africa’s Carina Horn came eighth (12.22sec).

Thipe and Horn then doubled up in the 200m where Thipe had to be satisfied with third after Moa Hjelmer (SWE) and Martina Giovanett beat her in 23.58sec and 23.86sec, Thipe finishing in 23.95sec.  Horn clocked 24.81sec to finish sixth.

Hannes Dreyer beat SA 100m champion Simon Magakwe in his speciality race, winning in 10.49sec.  Magakwe clocked 10.58sec to finish ahead of Swedish athlete Odain Rose who crossed the line in 10.64sec.  Dreyer was then beaten by Jonathan Astrand (FIN) in the men’s 200m, finishing second in 21.26sec.  The winning time was 21.24sec.  Magakwe also competed in this race but was disqualified.

Ruan de Vries, Gladwin Mzazi, Carina Horn and Mandie Brandt were also in action at the meeting with De Vries crossing the line in the men’s 110m hurldes in 14.07sec with only Philip Nossmy (SWE) going faster.  Nossmy clocked 13.91sec.

Gladwin Mzazi was timed at 13:49.65 and finished seventh in the men’s 5000m.  Uganda’s Thomas Ayeko won the race in 13:28.38. Mandie Brandt competed in the women’s 800m where her 2:06.48 was good enough for seventh.

Events this coming weekend include the Coppa Citta de Sesto San Giovanni race walking meeting in Italy, the Norrvidden Sundsvall Wind Sprint in Sweden and the 54th Znamensky Memorial in Russia.

Meeting International de Tunis – 16 June 2012

SA Long jump champion Zarck Visser and Juan van Deventer in the 1500m are scheduled to compete at the Meeting International de Tunis on Saturday.  Both athletes are still looking for their first qualifier.  “I don’t expect a very strong field to pull me to a good time,” said Van Deventer ahead of the meeting.

Coppa Citta de Sesto San Giovanni race walking – 17 June 2012

Pierre De Villiers, Lebogang Shange and Wayne Snyman will all compete in the men’s 20km walk at this meeting.  All three athletes competed at the XXVI Gran Premio Cantones de La Coruña in Spain on 9 June where Snyman and Shange finished 24th and 25th in 1:27:54 and 1:28:00 respectively.    De Villiers did not finish the race but is hoping to do a lot better on Sunday. “I would be happy with a new personal best or even a B-Qualifier,” said De Villiers.

Norrvidden Sundsvall Wind Sprint, Sweden – 17 June 2012

Athletes to compete in this meeting include Hannes Dreyer in the men’s 100m, Ruan de Vries in the men’s 110m hurdles, Carina Horn in both the women’s 100m and 200m and Estie Wittstock in the 200m.
