Pre Pietermaritzburg Women’s Race 2012

Pietermaritzburg SPAR Weekend Witness Women’s Races

Pietermaritzburg SPAR Weekend Witness Women’s Races

The ever-popular SPAR Weekend Witness Women’s Race promises to inject fun, laughter and a dose of competitive energy into the Oval Cricket Stadium at Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 9 September as thousands of women and girls with supportive menfolk take to the road in what is dubbed South Africa’s Most Beautiful Race.

This event is the fifth event out of six well-supported SPAR races with previous ones held in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban and one taking place next week in Pretoria and the final one in October in Johannesburg. While this race does not form part of the Grand Prix Series, it still offers a good mix of social and competitive running, and some good prize money for the top runners. A total of R21 100 will be awarded to runners in the various categories.

“This year a field of 3 500 women is expected, and once again, to ensure that the particpants don’t rest on their laurels,  a compeletely new route has been designed.” Says Brad Glasspoole, Race Director. “The race will begin as last year on Park Drive facing towards College Road, but will do an interesting route around the park which will finally loop back from Burger and Loop Streets to provide a variety of vistas for the participants.”

Top local runner from Scottsville, Kerry Koen, who was the first South African woman runner at the 2012 Comrades Marathon, and who came third in last year’s race, looks in good form and hopes to improve her time of 40.55.

The SPAR Weekend Witness Women’s Race this year is supporting the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa CHOC (Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics) which was established in 1979 by a parent group in Johannesburg.  R2 from every entry goes to CHOC and there is an opportunity to further donate online when entering or making donations at the registration on September 8 and 9.

Participants have a chance (if they remain behind for the prize-giving) of winning a number of choice prizes in a lucky draw such as appliances to the value of about R10 000 and a weekend for two at Elephant Rock Lodge at Namibiti Private Game Reserve valued at R7500.

With a new route the race promises to be challenging and fun at the same time. Both the 10km and 5km events begin at 08:00. Entry is limited to the first 3 500 entries. Entry fees are R60 for the 5km (licensed and non-licensed runners) R 60 for the 10km licensed runners and R 70 for the non-licensed runners with the closing date being Friday, 31 August 2012. Any late entrants after Friday 31 August 2012 can expect to pay R 80 for the 5km (licensed and non-licensed runners) R 80 for the 10km licensed runners and R 90 for the non-licensed runners. In order to safeguard cash payments and ensure that all entries are received, entrants can drop off their completed forms and pay for their entry at any Mr Price Store.

Alternatively you can enter online at www.sparwomensrace.co.za using a credit card. In-store collections will close when entries reach 3250.  Registration takes place at the Oval Cricket Stadium on Saturday, September 8 from 12 noon 17:00 and on Sunday, September 9 from 06:00 to 07:30..
