Justine Palframan

Justine Palframan

Justine Palframan solidified her position on the team to the World Junior Championships in Barcelona in June when she dominated the Junior women’s 400m final in Germiston at the Yellow Pages SA Youth, Junior and Schools Championships. Palframan crossed the line in 53.51sec, well inside the required 53.67sec. In the process she won the 400m title for the first time after finishing second in 2011.  The 19 year old Palframan previously reached the qualifying time (53.67sec) in 53.59sec at the Provincial Championships on 9 March. Stephanie Wicksell (AGN) finished behing Palframan in 55.35sec followed by Mareike Wolhuter (WPA) in 55.99sec.

Morné Moolman secured his spot in the World Junior Team when he won the men’s javelin throw competition.  The SA Youth javelin Record holder from Western Province effectively claimed victory in the first round of the competition when the javelin soared to 71.26m.  Ruan Erasmus’s (ACNW) third round attempt of 68.04m ensured him silver with Stephan Klue from Western Cape Schools finishing 3rd, with 66.54m.  World Youth Champion Reinhardt van Zyl did not compete in the event due to an elbow injury.

Apart from Palframan athletes that have reach the qualifying standard to date are Philippa van der Merwe in the women’s 100m, Siphello Ngqabaza and Fana Mofokeng in the 100m and  Duwayne Boer in the boys youth long jump.

Jordaan breaks SA Record in girls shot put

Lezaan Jordaan from Gauteng Schools set a new SA record in the girl’s shot put with the new 3kg weight.  Should nobody improve the distance by the end of the year this will be confirmed.  The battle was between Jordaan and schools’ Geraldine Duvenage with the event not being decided until the last round.

Jordaan lead after the first two rounds (16.32m first round) with Duvenage taking the lead in the 3rd round after her attempt measured 16.50m.  Jordaan then improved her distance in the 4th round by putting 16.92m.  Duvenage responded by just breaking the 17m mark (17.01).  The second last round saw Jordaan answering with 17.16m, Duvenage then decided the competition with a put of 17.19m.

A massive 17.52m in the final round was enough to crown the new SA Champion after Duvenage had no answer to Jordaans astonishing throw and finished with a final attempt of 16.63m.  Yolande Willemse from Eastern Cape Schools finished 3rd with her final round attempt measuring 14.65m.

Tamzin Thomas from Western Cape Schools won the Sub Youth 100m women’s race in 11.85sec, a time that could’ve placed her amongst the fastest youth athletes in South Africa were it  not for wind assistance of 2.2m/sec.  Cassidy Williamson (KZN Schools) crossed the line in 12.24sec followed by Jeanelle Griesel (AGN) in 12.36sec.

Other youth athletes who are beginning to make themselves known include Nhlapo Ranthabane (FS Schools) who ran 10.50sec in the 100m, Vuyani Masuku (Gauteng Schools) in 10.58sec and Walter Ungerer, also Gauteng schools in 10.60sec.
