Stephen Mokoka - Olympic Qualifier

Steven Mokoka (AGN) made the headlines on day 1 of the Yellow Pages SA Senior Track and Field Championships by virtually running the third fastest time ever in the 10 000m, solo. Mokoka and team mate Glawdin Mzazi broke away from the field early on in the race, chasing the 27:45.00 required as an Olympic A-Qualifiying time. By halfway though, Mzazi had started to flag and Mokoka was left to his own devises to attempt the qulaifier. Churning out laps of 66 and 67sec the 27 year-old also started to struggle at around the 7000-8000m mark, but was able to pick up the pace in th final 2km. “The wind was hard in the home-straight, so I used it in the backstraight to ‘float’ and worked harder on the home-straight.” [Read more...]

World Javelin Youth Champion, Reinhard van Zyl missed much of the season due to an elbow injury. During his absence, rival Morne Moolman won the South Africa Junior Title.
